Power to the App People.

I attended Trinity College’s Commencement ceremonies in Washington, DC last weekend.  Nancy Pelosi was the speaker. Before Nancy Peloisi spoke there were others who spoke, not any of them briefly. Two of them I thought were surely introducing Nancy Pelosi as their words were so flowery and biographical. But, no. They were just preparing to introduce another person who was going to introduce her.

Then, she spoke. “I was told to talk about my journey”, she said.  Uh-Oh. She said she was handing out to each graduate an autographed copy of her 2008 book, “Know Your Power. A Message to America’s Daughters.”

That’s when my IPHONE became the power tool.  The power to turn the restless into creatives. I was sitting in-between two young boys, age 9 and 7, who were all spiffed up for their mother’s graduation, but with an hour into the ceremony and we weren’t even close to the end, we were destined to get creative.

Quietly, we took photos of one another.  They used drawing and sketching apps and phone apps that I had on my phone to draw on my photo and on their photos.  They decided to give mine a “faded” filter which..um..I protested I’d already achieved quite naturally, but they insisted.   It allowed the time to pass so by the time we looked up, Nancy was gone and we hadn’t been a disruption to those around us.  Best of all, their mother’s name was called to come up and receive her well deserved Master of Fine Arts diploma.

Power to the app people. I love ‘em.

I’d like to recommend that all sentient beings with young children to corral, to remember to bring their IPHONES and apps to graduation ceremonies just in case the speakers arrive but inspiration is not in their briefcase.

Spring

Spring time in Washington, DC from a famous market near Capitol Hill.  Inside I took photographs of pigs feet and pears.  The pig’s feet were not at all spring-like.

A Walk Down Pennyslvania Avenue

inaugurationday2009

I had no idea optimism was so exhausting!  It’s only 6:30PM and I’m listing 40 degrees to Serta Pillow Top.

There were, of course, so many images.  I haven’t even looked at all that I clicked.  And, words.  His, of course.  We are now officially in the hands of a wordsmith.  But, the surprise?  That poet who followed him.  I must find out more about her.  I loved it.

The television is now on mute in the living room.

Ironically, my final image for this series “Driving to the Inaugural” is not one from the inaugural podium, or the monuments, or even the millions of people crowded together on the mall.

It is one of the new President and his wife walking down Pennsylvania Avenue after the inaugural. One foot in front of the other, their-our- journey begins on pavement despite armored cars and bailouts trailing behind and before us.

They were on the way to the White House before attending the inaugural parade.

Me?  I went to pick up my repaired computer!  Hard Drive intact, nothing lost. A new logic board installed.

A good omen for the republic, don’t you think?  Ah.

See you in a few days and thanks for coming along for the ride.

I’m now mere inches from the pillow top, fading fast….fast…fa…..

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

This is the 15th and final post in my series called “Driving to the Inaugural.”   I am driving from my computer with the assistance of memory and past images and television and internet. Triple A doesn’t have road service for this journey even though I have a premium membership.  Here are the others in the series:

Driving to the Inaugural

whitehouse01

My journey to the Inaugural begins.  I take shots behind the wheel where ever I go, right?  Today, Friday the 16th of January, there is already gridlock in Washington, DC according to washingtonpost.com.

I am homebound in 2 degree temperatures, fearful of crowds and cold and so many other things and, yet, I feel hope.  So,  I decided to get to Washington, DC the only way I know how: with imagery.

Over the course of the next five days I’m going to use whatever creativity I have on the working hard drive (no, my main computer is still not back) and anything I can steal from TV–as another of my little known or needed skills is TV Photography–to explore why this inaugural is like none other in my 63 year lifetime.

Welcome to my front row seat to history.

I’m beginning by driving right on to the White House lawn which is totally in keeping with my actual driving habits.
